What You Will Do:

Under general supervision performs the census reconciliation of each nursing unit for the Admitting Department. Assist the Admitting Supervisor in assuring the effectiveness and efficiency of the census through report verification and performing admissions, transfers, discharges and/or bed control functions. Confirms the proper accommodation codes are in place ensuring correct charging during midnight processing. Verifies admission statistics daily, monthly and year-to-date

What You Need to Be Successful:

High school diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.


Two years work experience performing patient registration in a patient healthcare setting is required.


Certified Patient Accounting Tech (CPAT) or Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) is preferred.


Must pass the UMMC Patient Administrative Services knowledge based test within two consecutive attempts during the initial employment period.


Demonstrated knowledge of financial requirements is preferred.


Demonstrated knowledge of on-line patient registration system for entry and retrieval of demographic and financial information, retrieval of patient information and departmental performance statistics.


Highly effective verbal, written and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate hospital policies and procedures to all levels of staff and patients, complete admission and/or other documentation and respond promptly to instructions given. Highly effective listening skills with ability to listen to patient information and translate it to written documentation.


PC Literate, with ability to enter and/or retrieve demographic, financial, and/or patient information on an online registration system.


Demonstrated problem-solving skills for appropriately resolving varied patient admission and registration issues.


Ability to resolve patient complaints using positive, proficient customer relations skills. Ability to work independently; ability to respond effectively under stress.


Ability to establishes and maintain courteous and effective relationships that foster quality customer service, and demonstrate sensitivity and awareness of customer needs; when dealing with all levels of staff and patients.


Ability to use resourcefulness and problem-solving skills when handling telephone and in-person inquiries or to resolve patient complaints or patient admission and/or registration issues.


Ability to work independently and respond effectively under stress. Ability to prioritize and manage numerous tasks in different stages of completion.


Ability to observe and apply relevant hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Observe patient right to privacy in handling personal information in compliance with the Privacy Rule (under Title II of the Act) of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), ensuring the security and privacy of each patient’s health care information.


Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and ability to assess data reflective of the patient's requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs.
