What You Will Do:
General Summary
Under general supervision, assemble, collect and analyze clinical data on patients from medical records and other sources for the statewide Tumor Registry reporting and for various research reports, in accordance with departmental procedures.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.
1. Assembles, analyzes and reviews various types of cancer patient data in order to complete Data Collection Forms for protocol reporting or for physicians' research projects, and recommends modifications to improve the accuracy and thoroughness of patient information processing in accordance with departmental procedures.
A. Prepares worksheets, sampling methods and reporting procedures for use in gathering research data either manually or via computerized software.
B. Reviews patient medical records to collect hospital resource utilization data, such as, length of stay, patient conditions/complications or pre-existing conditions, and patient outcome.
C. Makes recommendations concerning time saving methods in data collection.
D. Updates and maintains database on an ongoing basis.
2. Assists Protocol Coordinators with reports and forms. Sends laboratory specimens to outside laboratories.
A. Prepares charts, tables and graphs based on findings; identifies and evaluates trends and reports to the supervisor.
B. Generates numerous standard computer reports on patient demographics, and other pertinent data as requested.
C. Prepares reports on specific patient populations for physicians requesting data for research papers.
D. Generates periodic reports for the Principal Investigator, Director and Administrator of the Greenebaum Cancer Center, e.g. monthly admissions, patient complications, or any other patient data, upon request.
3. Determines reliability of data sources by evaluating information, determining errors and notifying responsible parties.
4. Attends and participates in in-service training and various educational programs for professional growth and development. Keeps up-to-date on changes in the field.
A. Develops proficiency in PC skills, learning various spreadsheet software, word processing and statistical analysis software in order to produce reports from data gathered.
What You Need to Be Successful:
Education and Experience
1. High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.
2. Two years of data management experience is required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Knowledge of medical terminology, mathematics, statistics, medical insurance information; general knowledge of dBase, Excel, Word, or other spreadsheet software is required.
2. Familiarity with patient medical charts or oncology care is required.
3. Proficient ability to utilize a personal computer to aid in data collection is required.
4. Effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary to work successfully with multiple levels of Health Care staff.
