What You Will Do:

The University of Maryland Children's Hospital is seeking an experienced, master's prepared RN to join our team to provide clinical practice leadership in the role of Clinical Practice & Education Specialist (CP&ES) for our 19 bed Pediatric ICU/CICU/IMC. The Children's Hospital is experiencing dramatic growth in several programs including care for cardiac (and neurosurgery) patients and care of ECMO patients.


***Masters degree in nursing or related health science field, 5 years of progressively responsible clinical experience and 2 years of experience in a mentoring/training /leadership role is REQUIRED***

The Clinical Practice & Education Specialist will assist in developing nurses to work in today's environment while expanding the nursing practice for tomorrow through linking evidence-based practice to relevant research and best practice standards. He/she utilizes those principles to plan educational programming for nurses who are at various developmental levels in practice from novice to expert.


The PICU Clinical Practice & Education Specialist:

Provides support to PICU and division leadership in ensuring excellence in clinical care, patient care, clinical practice, and quality outcomes.


1. Assesses and translates the educational needs of PICU nurses

2. Serves as an expert clinical resource by:

A. Creates and/or coordinates staff programs, including orientation and in service education relevant to their learning needs and organizational goals.


B. Mentors staff at the bedside by:
? 1. Translating theory
? 2. Performing skills assessments
? 3. Individualizing approach to best meet the learner’s needs

3. Assists staff to share their expertise with others though scholarly activities

4. Works with multidisciplinary team to measure clinical quality and create plans to enhance and/ or sustain performance

5. Applies developmental knowledge and family centered care skills to application of knowledge at the bedside.

What You Need to Be Successful:

Masters degree in nursing or related health science field is required.


5 years clinical experience in PICU, with Pediatric CSICU experience desirable. At least one year in a role performing staff education is preferred.


5 years of progressively responsible clinical experience. 2 years of experience must be in a mentoring/training /leadership role.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. Clinical and professional knowledge of current issues relevant to patient care delivery. Additional knowledge in the areas of professional development, group process, change management and effective leadership is also required.


2. General knowledge of PC and database management software packages is required.


3. Highly effective verbal and written skills are required to work with all levels of hospital personnel, administrators and clinical staff.


4. Demonstrated ability to independently manage programs, staff and large scale projects. Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and follow through on assignments and/or projects. Ability to analyze and conceptually develop ideas, proposals and programs.


5. Ability to acts as a role model by displaying appropriate behaviors and skills through direct and indirect patient care.


6. Demonstrated leadership abilities, including collaborative, consultative and coaching skills are required.


7. Ability to develop collaborative programs and projects with other disciplines is required. Must be able to contribute to team effectiveness, build relationships and facilitate improvements.


8. Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and ability to assess data reflective of the patient's requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs.
