UMMS is seeking a Benefits Analyst for Retirement
General Summary
Under general supervision of the Retirement Benefits Director, supports the administration of Retirement Benefit Plans via data monitoring, auditing, analysis, and validation to ensure data integrity as well as timely and accurate processing of retirement plan transactions.
II. Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.
1. Responsible for monitoring, researching and validating all data/data integrity related to UMMS Retirement Benefits Plans, by performing regular self-audits and reconciliations of eligibility, enrollment, hours & earnings, funding, and billing data in accordance with plan documents and UMMS policies and procedures.
2. Analyzes audit results for causes and/or patterns, reports findings/results to Director and to appropriate staff (HR / HRIS / IT / Payroll / Finance), and works with them to resolve discrepancies.
3. Liaises with internal staff (HR, HRIS, IT, Payroll, Finance) and with external vendors to find efficient methods for retrieving, testing, and validating participant data out of UMMS data systems as well as out of vendors’ data systems, including coordination / synchronization of data between the two.
4. Develops new audits to improve overall administration of the retirement benefits program on an as-needed basis, based on identified objectives, then performs such audits periodically, ensures integrity of and shares results with appropriate management representative.
5. Provides periodic recommendations to management for potential process and/or reporting improvements. Assists in the development and implementation of cost-effective and customer-responsive administration systems for employee benefit plans.
6. Maintains benefits records and documents necessary for proper benefits administration. Collects and reviews for accuracy and completeness the data needed for processing new benefits enrollments, requests for changes, and requests for pension benefit estimates & commencements, including timely and accurate calculation of pension benefits, uploading of pertinent data files into UMMS internal HRIS and, on occasion, if/as needed, manually inputting directly into external vendors systems.
7. Provides support to the budget management process by tracking actual costs vs budget and reporting any significant variances to management.
8. Provides support to potential/proposed new/change initiatives relative to retirement benefit plan design by running cost comparisons and performing related analysis.
9. May occasionally counsel employees on eligibility, benefit levels, or other matters related to retirement benefit plans.
10. Performs initial preparation and/or reconciliation of bi-weekly retirement funding, in coordination with Retirement Benefits Senior Consultant and Retirement Benefits Director.
11. Receives, validates, records, and processes for payment all vendors’ fees/invoices.
12. Assists in conducting benefit surveys with area hospitals and regional published surveys comparing plan benefits, features and costs, as requested; research various benefit options for possible implementation.
13. Supports the annual preparation & production process for retirement plan valuations, audits, and 5500s.
14. May assist Sr. Benefits Consultant for Retirement Benefits by serving as a back-up coordinator for Maryland State benefits, occasionally counseling employees on retirement benefits, and processing their retirement forms.
15. Attends and participates in internal and external meetings as needed/appropriate.
16. Performs related duties as requested.
What You Need to Be Successful:
Education & Experience
1. Minimum of three years of professional Human Resources Benefits Administration experience is required. A focus on benefits audit and analysis is preferred.
2. Some college coursework in Business, Human Resources, Accounting, or related field preferred.
III. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
3. Knowledge and ability to apply concepts, principles, practices, and procedures related to Human Resources and Benefits administration, and relevant state and federal regulations.
4. Experience in the application of HR Information Systems such as Lawson, PeopleSoft, Oracle, SAP, etc, is required.
5. PC literate with ability to use Microsoft Office Suite, in particular MS Excel to manipulate and analyze data.
6. Ability to use resourcefulness and analytical skills to research various documents and data to resolve inquiries and discrepancies and interpret data.
7. Effective verbal and written communication skills to communicate concepts related to retirement and data analysis.
8. Ability to work independently, handle multiple tasks and meet related deadlines.
